Tapwrit captures the 149th running of the Belmont Stakes

Tapwrit won the Belmont Stakes, the third leg of the Triple Crown, on Saturday at Belmont Park in New York.

Irish War Cry and Meantime set the pace for much of the race.

Tapwrit moved into second in the stretch and Jose Ortiz moved him to the lead deep in the lane.

The winner was trained by Todd Pletcher. It was Pletcher’s third Belmont winner. He also trained Kentucky Derby champion Always Dreaming/

Irish War Cry, who finished 10th in the Kentucky Derby, was sent off as the favorite in the 1 1/2 miles “Test of a Champion.

Epicharis, a horse that shipped from Japan, was scratched from the Belmont in the morning, leaving 11 horses in the starting gate.

The only horse to race in all three legs of the Triple Crown in 2017 was Lookin at Lee.

The Preakness was taken two weeks later by Cloud Computing.

A trainer usually known for having a huge role in the Belmont Stakes played an enormous role on the undercard.

Bob Baffert horses won four stakes. They were: West Coast in the $150,000 Easy Goer; Kentucky Oaks champ Abel Tasman in the $687,000 Acorn; American Anthem in the $500,00o Woody Stephens; and Mor Spirit in the $1.2 million Met Mile.

Jockey Mike Smith won five races on the card, including the Ogden Phipps, which saw the sensational Songbird capture her 4-year-old debut.
