Calgary Flames Officially Earn Playoff Spot

April 1, 2017

With a win versus the San Jose Sharks, the Calgary Flames have officially clinched a playoff spot for the 2017 postseason. The Flames become the sixth team to clinch a playoff spot in the West, and the fourth to do so in their division (the Pacific).

With a 5-2 win against the San Jose Sharks, one that included goals from Johnny Gaudreau, Sean Monahan, Matt Stajan, Alex Chiasson, and Sam Bennett, the Calgary Flames have clinched their position in the playoffs. It’s their first since the 2015 postseason when the Flames lost in the second round.

The Flames failed to qualify last year but were a surprising team this year. Many experts did not expect the Flames to qualify for the playoffs, which they just did.

The Flames earned their spot this season after making offseason moves for Brian Elliott and Troy Brouwer. The Flames also made a trade for Michael Stone at the deadline.

Reliable Flames

The Flames were able to clinch their playoff position on the backs of players like Gaudreau (59 points), Monahan (58) and Mikael Backlund (50). Having a young forward like Matthew Tkachuk didn’t hurt either, as the rookie has posted 46 points so far this season.

The Flames got hot recently, posting a 6-4 record in their last ten games. With a fresh victory over division rival San Jose (who have cooled considerably), the Flames look to climb up in the rankings. The Calgary Flames have a chance of becoming one of the top 3 seeds in the Pacific. This could potentially earn them a series with their rivals in Edmonton. That could mean a Battle of Alberta playoff series.

The Flames have looked like a playoff team since the deadline, looking especially good in the month of March. It was only a matter of time until they clinched their playoff spot.
